1.2 Product life-cycle management data

A hardware producer uses a product life-cycle management (PLM) system with several hundred licenses. In practice, different people use this software differently. A handful of them use its full potential, but the rest of the people use it read-only, as a reference. Unfortunately, the PLM software does not provide separate user roles and licenses.

For such a scenario, the company could decide to keep only a few PLM licenses for the power users and migrate its data into an "archive" system, which gives read-only access for hundreds of users. The cost they spare on the license can be substantial, but the new read-only access could have even more benefits, could provide faster and more convenient information access.

The PLM data could be synchronized and kept up-to-date in the archive system via an automated nightly process.
